Moby

MOBY

Has an architecture blog! That is all....

Okay it's not really all. I was just so stunned by this fact and the fact that he completely and totally gets Los Angeles. I feel like I'm always playing defense for that city but I'm beginning to think I might start keeping my mouth shut and not tell anyone about it's wonders. So Moby shhhh don't let them know about it.

p.s. Moby have you read Reyner Banham's Los Angeles The architecture of four ecologies? I think you should. But purchase an old hardcover copy with the David Hockney painting on the cover because you are going to want to keep this one.

p.p.s. If you have a moment listen to his interview with Frances Anderton on kcrw. My favorite quote from the interview...
"I like when people dismiss LA architecture as ugly. That's because you haven't been invited inside"

Amy Vázquez

AV01 AV02
I'm incredibly bummed that I'm going to miss this show Continuous & Still but if you are in the Bay Area will you please go for me and report back? What I love about Amy's work is that not only would it be gorgeous as is up on your wall but I can really see it in textile format as well. Wallpaper, Bedding, and especially in the form of an incredible dress (by your favorite designer here). I'm blanking on the designer right now but you feel me right?
Biba
Ossie Clark or
for today perhaps that crazy Dane. Henrik Vibskov.

Or feel free to suggest who she would be a perfect match for, I'm truly curious what you think.

Opening Reception: Tonight from 6pm to 8pm.

Alcatraz: part three

RU01
The last of the photos are of the incredibly gorgeous surrounds. I would have taken more but people I was walking around in the fucking rain for days people for days!!! and I was wet and my camera lens kept getting wet because the wind was blowing in every freaking direction. So this is what you get for a wet, tired, and wind swept gal trying her best not to lose it in front of her little brother.

All the surrounding buildings are just ruins of the grandeur they were. Basically there was a whole civilian life on the island too for all the families that lived there along with the officers that ran the prison. The wardens house is above and the rest were a series of Halls, manufacturing  facilities and other ancillary buildings. The entire island was also beautifully planted and well kept. It was like walking around in some kind exotic garden.

Alcatraz: part two

IA01

I know I've said this already but I was truly inspired and intrigued with Alcatraz. Here are a few images on it's details and interior. And as a previous Anon, commentator mentioned the grounds are just as beautiful. I'll post those tomorrow. Happy hump day.

Alcatraz: part one

A-RM01

I've lived in San Francisco cumulatively (moved away and back) now for about 9 years. Wow, how time flies. But not once in all those years did I ever make a trip to Alcatraz. Don't give me any grief, how many of you New Yorkers have been to the Statue of Liberty? Hollywood sign, Los Angeles? Or, feel free to insert your famed historical site from your city here. The funny thing is, it is one of the only sites I've actually been interested in. So, thanks Robert (my brother) for suggesting we go.

One of my favorite parts was all the artwork, music and games that were in some of the cells. I have no idea if they are the real works (the tour didn't say) or if it's purely styled but I couldn't help but romanticize it a little and believe they were true pieces from the actual inmates. I learned so much. Did you know it was JFK that finally closed Alcatraz down as being too inhumane? Did you know the Marines were called in during a horrific and bloody revolt of the inmates? There was a full on war just off our shores. Incredible. No wonder it's been a such a draw all these years. More to come later this week.

Dwell and Marin Magazine Home Tours

DMMHT01

I couldn't be any more incredibly excited to introduce a new series of home tours. I've long been a fan and gone several years in a row to the AIASF home tours which is part of the Architecture and the City festival that happens every September but that is just but once a year and nearly all the tours are right here in San Francisco with a rare tour outside. So when I heard about the Marin tours I nearly squealed out loud. If you haven't gone to anything like this before I really highly recommend getting yourself at least a one day ticket because while the photos are incredible there really is no substitute for experiencing these spaces in person. In photos you don't experience the flow of the plan or the natural adjacencies, the scale or the materials and textures, or even how these spaces nestle into the landscape. It's an all sensory experience.

I also highly recommend it for anyone thinking of remodeling or designing their space as you can see all the materials in action and not in a catalog not to mention it brings you in close contact to several different architect's work. See the details below to nab yourself a ticket. See you there.

MIA & Chinatown

CT02

Sorry to go MIA on you once again but my little brother was in town so we were running around doing all kinds of touristy things I never do. Mostly because they all seem so cliché and don't seem representative of San Francisco at all (hello Fisherman's Wharf) but I let go a little bit and just went with it. We even went over to Alcatraz which was a first for me. It's gorgeous over there and I really found so much beauty in it's decay and it's pure austerity of the structure and details. I'll try and share those later this week.

But for now just a few shots of that famed street down through Chinatown. The Colors, the juxtaposition of materials and the whimsey, all made me smile. I should surely take the time to make this stroll happen a little more often.

p.s. A super fun post on a local happening coming on Monday

Massimo and Lella Vignelli

Hellooo again, So it's been a bit longer than a week I know. And to be honest I'm still a little under water over here but you know it's odd this blog has become so much a part of my day that it's a little painful to be away for so long. And I can't lie there are days when I've got nothing and it tortures me. I mean how can one be 'on' everyday?! But of course it was taking quite a bit of effort to ignore the inspired works I came across. This one in particular.... and can I ask if this is Lella and Massimo why is everything only labeled as designed by him. If they were a team is that necessary? Anyhoo, this one takes a while but I highly recommend it. There are some incredible lines in there by Massimo.

"If Lella doesn't like it, it goes in the wastebasket"

"Yea, I did a house when I was in school but, too much work!" (priceless commentary on the physical action of design and building architecture around the 14 min mark, it's all true folks;)

"There are plenty of good designers in the world, there are very few good clients"

Brought to my attention by the ever talented Wary Meyers. Who recently came into a mess Vignelli's
