An afternoon with... is a personal project by Michael Mundy brought to my attention by the ever talented YHBHS. And as all of you know I can't get enough of peering into other peoples homes. Especially those who are creatively inclined. Have a look see for yourself. They are incredibly intimate and really catch the embodiment of each space as it relates to it's inhabitants.

p.s. I left the photos exactly as Michael had them composed them since they seemed to want to remain that way.

Some of the images I tweeted... funny I kind of enjoy their simple observations of the everyday variety. Things I wouldn't normally post here. Anyhoo, you can find me over there, right here. Come over and say hello. Happy Saturday. Here's to hoping the sun comes out one of these days.

Up in the clouds

JH01
JH02

Since I'll be up in the clouds shortly it triggered a memory of Jacob Hashimoto's work. I came across his work when I was looking for creative ways to turn "the barn" into another dreamy world for our wedding a couple of years ago. We ended up in a different location so no clouds were created but I'm still dreaming of them.

And on another completely unrelated topic, I was listening to my Grandmother wax on  last night about a very generous Japanese gentleman who took her and her daughters out many times while she was raising them on her own in New York. I love that story. Apparently he would invite them to dinner and as they walked to China town he would run into more and more people he knew and he would invite them along too. By the time they got to the restaurant there would be at least 20 people along for dinner and he always picked up the tab. I wish I had a photo of him.

And Kate's Los Angeles weekends are having me green with envy;) Not sure how people can hate on L.A.

Not much to say here except I can't wait to see this film... might be fun to get a group of friends together and dress up for it don't you think.

Faking it

FS01
FS02

Unfortunately my Grams has decided to populate her place with fake foliage. Man, I really dislike faking it. There are so many low maintenance options out there I just don't understand the need to bond with plastic shrubbery.

In fact if you really do need a bit of green and have a penchant for killing anything that sprouts may I suggest taking it so far in the other direction there is no doubt that you are faking it for all to see.

The elegant plant like sculptures above are by Ferry Staverman. I can't really tell you much else since I don't read Dutch but you see more over here

Christiane Högner

CH

I haven't been so good about posting while being wrapped up in family affairs. I'm going to admit something... I'm not very good at doing several things at once. I personally find it appalling when a friend has made a date with you but can't ignore their phone for a few hours so I try (key word here) to abide by the same rules. I know, what a stick in the mud but, isn't it more pleasant when we all afford one another a few courtesies.

While traveling to see family I picked up the latest issue of dwell to read while in transit and fell for Christiane Högner's All for One shelves. It made me think that I really miss making things. I'm quite famliar with the plastic cases used to transport nearly everything from glassware to loaves of bread since I put myself through school working in the restaurant industry, that familiarity made me smile. And really isn't that what it's all about?

Scout Regalia

SR01
SR02

I stumbled upon Scout Regalia and instantly thought um... why haven't I heard of them before? If you haven't noticed I'm not exactly your architect's architect. You have been reading this blog haven't you? Scout Regalia is everything I've been looking for in an architecture studio, multidisciplinary, open-minded, fun name that isn't the principle's name. Okay, so that last one isn't all that important but sometimes it would be nice to see a few more architecture firms that don't sound like lawyer's offices, am I wrong? It is exactly the kind of firm that Los Angeles germinates and supports. (So what's up San Francisco? Yea, I'm talking to you.)

Their project above Dingbats 2.0 is just a competition (one they happened to win an honorable mention for) but what I wouldn't give to see it realized. Wouldn't you want to live there? You can read more about the details of the project over on their site

thanks ink + wit for the heads up

Brazilian Tiles

BTH01
BTH02

Jorgie (am I allowed to call you Jorgie on here?) You are killing it! Your photographs are making me sigh sigh sigh at the state of my bank account. I need to come see you! The tile work is just beautiful exactly the kind of thing a Carioca can point out to you and give you a bit of history. Jorge do they have a building department? Alert them quick to these disappearing gems!

If you all want to see more of where this comes from visit Jorge's blog Album Carioca (remember to click on his photos to see them larger) and then book your flight to Rio de Janeiro or just enjoy the virtual flight as I'm doing. This is just the sort of thing you need for a bit of inspiration injected into your work. I would really love to see an all white kitchen with only the floors tiled in one of these wonderful colorful patterns. Wouldn't you? Preferably my kitchen but well that isn't happening anytime soon... so, who wants a kitchen redesign by moi of the description above?

MCMF

MCM

A few finds from Mid Century Modern Finds. Great pieces at amazingly affordable prices but, be quick they go fast. Good lord, do I sound like some awful radio copy? But it's true... see for yourself. Alright I'm shutting up now.... I'm obviously a little rusty after the long weekend.

Thanks Leilani for pointing out this bay area gem.

the sun is shining

PATTERN

Do you do this too? Somewhere around mid-January to February my brain thinks winter is supposed to be over. After all, the holidays are done and you can't buy anymore sweaters, scarfs, or warm things in the stores so it should be instantly spring right?

Oh how wrong can a gal be? Well the sun is shining today and it's Friday so enjoy the spring inspired spread above. I wish I could mix patterns with such aplomb. xox

Some things...

So it's Girl Scout cookie time kids. And my niece is selling em. But she lives in Georgia and I live in San Francisco. So you would think no problem I buy things online all the time right? Wrong! The Girl Scouts don't have anything in place for the girls to hock their cookies via the www. What?! What is wrong with the Girl Scouts? This really bums me out because while it was fine for me to go door to door back in the day, that is not how the world works today. So Girl Scouts, I request that you get something together by next year so that the girls can sell online and have those boxes attributed to them. (that last part of the sentence is key)

I do have one more comment. I'm not a fan of your new logo. Why in the world would you think of updating an iconic Saul Bass logo?!  While it surely isn't as bad as the Gap debacle it's really disconcerting. And while I do appreciate what The Original Champions of Design did in other areas of the rebrand namely the type treatment and some of the pattern work, I really think they should have left the logo alone. I mean really? new nose, new lips, and bangs?! Is that what the Girl Scouts are about?

Thoughts? Do you agree? Do you think I'm way off base here? Are there times that we as designers should say no to the client?

Practicing restraint

HCM01
HCM02

Out shopping this past December for a few more holiday gifts I came across this book. The Mister informed me that under no circumstances was I to purchase it. Boo! I assumed that this was going to appear under the tree, but Christmas has come and gone folks and there is still no book.

It's getting really hard to hold back at this point, especially when I keep seeing it on every blog and a dear friend even wrote about the author in an article that graced the pages of the Chronicle. Not to mention holding back on books is not really my strong suit. So kids that have acquired this treasure already... is it as good as it looks? Tempt me. On second thought don't.

By the way this is making the rounds, sooooo good!
And another book I'd like to get my hands on.

More closets and a hanger

JSCV03
JSCV02

JSCV01I know I just posted not all that long ago about Jeana's Closet Visits... but she has a new site and I just love them SOOOO MUCH! Mostly because it indulges me in two of my favorite pastimes. Peering into peoples homes and peering into the most adorable swoon worthy closets.

The best part? That sweet hanger as the header/logo/mark. It's all sorts of genius. Go check it out here.

Architect, Painter, Physicist

RR01

Well since I just shared with you Jorge's place I thought I would share a place that Jorge shared with me and well you too if you cared to look, just kidding of course. Darling Jorge has just started his own blog and I for one couldn't be more excited that my tour of Rio de Janeiro will continue from afar.

The home you see is that of Roberto (an architect and painter) and Rosinha (a physicist, probably the coolest job, besides perhaps a psychologist/neuroscientist). Their treasures and curating skills make for a warm and modern home, don't you want to just curl up with a book in that living room. And I really just love a red door.

RR02

The mix of antique and modern pieces assures you that the place isn't too precious, something that can be forgotten when reading up on all those design tomes.

RR03
RR04

I'm assuming this is Roberto's studio space. How perfect to have your studio so close to you. A place you can leave everything out so you can return to it just as it was. This is so important in the creative process don't you think. I really need to work on this myself... our next place needs to have a studio space not just an office.

RR05

...a few more details shots. The iconic Eames lounge and hallway full of paintings beautifully framed. If you would like to see more head on over to Jorge's blog Album Carioca. Oh and one more hint, click on his photos to view them full size. xox K

Carioca Dreams

JP02
Remember when I mentioned that I hadn't been to my friend Jorge's place in quite some time and the photos I have are most likely not representative... Well another dear friend went to visit him this past November and shared with me the evolution of his place, actually he shared it with more then just me it's up on his new blog. So if you want to see more of these photos head on over to zrh2sfo. Surely you know Robert, yes you do, remember

I'm swooning over the bedroom above with all those paintings of Rio de Janeiro. And that calming beautiful green to match the waters surrounding sugarloaf.  This was our room when we stayed with him but it has changed so much since then.

JP03

I never did get a shot of the gorgeous stained glass windows in the second bedroom.

JP04

Jorge really does have an eye for the incredible and mythical pieces. Hopefully come Monday I'll have a another Brazilian abode for you to venture to. Until then Happy Friday. xo

Bill Curry

BC

I came across a light fixture I was swooning after by Bill Curry. (damn you ebay reminders)  I of course looked him up immediately and found that I enjoyed quite a few of his whimsical pieces (mostly lights, I even have one of his lovelites in my living room, who knew?) but I didn't find much else about him. Anyone else know anything about Bill Curry?

By the way the names of the two lights are just as fun as they look, "Cattail" lamp on the left (wouldn't that look great in a babes room?) and, "Tranquil" lamps on the top right.

Sam Maloof: part two

Some of the many doors photographed from the exterior. They have different closures from the inside.

There were many works by Stan Bitters on the property and actually seeing his work on South Willard is what alerted me to the fact that a Stan Bitters piece resided in my living room. It also gave me that extra push to get to Sam and Alfreda Maloofs home on the very next visit to Los Angeles. If you live in the area go! It really is worth the drive as it is quite far east. It's open for tours Thursday and Saturdays only and you should really make a reservation so call ahead.

And by the way cuties I have finally folded and I'm going to try out this thing called twitter. Have you heard of it? Just kidding, of course. I've held out so long... but thought well let's just check it out. So far, I'm kind of enjoying it. Dare I say it's actually kind of fun. You can find me here, come follow me;)

Sam Maloof's place

SM01

I have an embarassing confession. I hadn't been to Sam Maloof's house/workshop until this holiday break. Umm, yep, it was like 15 to 20 minutes from my school and I could have gone when Sam was actually still walking around this earth but somehow I missed out on that opportunity. So when he passed away last year I thought...
This is ridiculous and quickly put it on my must do list.

So here you are part one of two. All photos are taken from the exterior as there was a 'no photography' policy indoors. YES, that was extremely painful since the interior was, let's face it, where it's at. This was an artist and a woodworkers' home after all. Although I think I got some pretty lovely shots from the perimeter. Hope you enjoy them.

SM02
SM03

Forms and jigs hanging in the workshop window. It is on the same site as the home.

SM04

Every single door had completely different details. Some had four Different hinges on ONE door.

SM05

The doors to the workshop were the same accent blue that reoccurred on the rooftops and doorways throughout the complex. It's such a great color and it really popped.

SM06

I fell for these gorgeous draperies hanging in a room that wasn't shown to us.

SM07
SM08

Garden details and the original guesthouse which is now the visitor center. Part two tomorrow. xo
