the good the bad and well... the ugly

Hello everyone, thanks for hanging in there and still stopping by to see what's going on. I've had a mad week of the good, Jorge and I had dinner on Tuesday night at my all time favorite restaurant of the moment Thermidor (and most likely much longer as I adore Neil and Bruce) and then we spent all day Wednesday just cavorting around the city to all the places I haven't had time to see and check out. Some obvious like the gorgeous Prairie Collective above and others like Coup D'Etat a place I've been meaning to visit but have passed by repeatedly telling myself "I must check out that space" and then never doing so.

the bad... let's just say I keep trying to push things forward and I keep getting the push back. Hopefully next week delivers some answers (sorry for being so cryptic)

and the ugly... last night while I finally made it to bed at a decent hour. (It's been months) the mister woke me up again to deliver the news that our light fixtures were creating their own showers (aka our kitchen is flooding from our neighbors above) I had left my laptop and Wacom tablet on the kitchen table directly underneath this water producing light fixture. It has yet to show any signs of life. sigh...

So Happy Friday and Happy Halloween everyone and see you next week. xoxo K

High-Waist it!

P02
P01

Kind of dying for a few new pairs of slacks but for now I'll be admiring these ensembles from afar. I couldn't be more overjoyed with the high waist direction. I've been cursed with a long torso and a curvy figure and these will do wonders of illusion not to mention all shirts will now be the right size. Since the low waist long torso makes every shirt a midriff... which I was never comfortable with, even in my teens.

Also this week is a bit mad with to do's so postng may be sparse. Hopefully it is a week of good changes. I'll let you know when I know. xo

Bottom three... not sure. Sorry I didn't think I would be posting them. If you know pass along the knowledge.

Friday Surprise

7x7-01
7x7-02

I usually don't share our space on here and when I do it's small vignettes. As much as I love to peer into others homes I've been a bit shy about showing my own. So here's your chance to see what our place looks like. (Well a small part of it anyway) We were so flattered to be chosen to be part of 7x7's design issue. A big thanks go out to Leilani and team!

I thought I was going to have to wait nearly another month before I could share this with you but I was pleasantly surprised by Leilani earlier this week. I didn't post earlier because I couldn't get my hands on a hard copy as they weren't in the newsstands just yet. This one I had to borrow from my generous neighbor. Thanks neighbor! ;)

It's a great issue! I highly recommend getting your hands on one. Besides the Small Stakes piece (above), there are are great views into Bar Agricole, a guide to local flea's, and an stellar medical marijuana shop that I will most definitely be posting about right before voting day;)

And for those not living in the Bay Area, I have not seen a digital link as of yet but I will update when I do.
Leilani just forwarded me a link just go HERE. Thanks Leilani xo (and for those not in the know, just click on the pages to enlarge them;)

UPDATE: 7x7 finally posted to their site as well.

All photography by the ever talented Jen Siska. Thanks Jen!

Wedding Gift

JG

The most amazing wedding gift from my dear friend Jorge. The sculpture, made in Brazil with each face by a different artist. Apparently people they know, or people on the street. What I want to know is who knows a blue Jesus? When we visited him in Rio a few years ago I fell in love with it and this trip he surprised us with it. I'm over the moon. I'll find out more about it in the next few days.

Now off to find somewhere to hang it...

A new project I'm working on...

Molly

Excerpts from Molly Lambert's Mad Men reviews and reasons you should fall head over heels for her...
SPOILER ALERT... if you haven't watched the latest don't read below or click on links

Don told Dr. Faye he was going to miss her, but he was lying. Megan told Don she just wanted to fuck, but she was lying. Betty and Don are kind of soulmates because they are both incredibly good at lying, and concealing any remorse they may have from themselves and others.

I thought Don said he didn't go in for stunts? Too bad it looks like the Don Draper's Midlife Crisis Stunt Spectacular is just starting and it's bound to be every bit as breathtaking and ball-draining as Jackass 3D

Why is it that many contemporary male thinkers repudiate the imperialist legacy of Columbus but affirm dimensions of that legacy by their refusal to repudiate patriarchy? - bell hooks

Just like Roger Sterling, Bill Clinton always made his accountability into a joke. Politically liberal men with bad personal gender politics are the worst

We all suffer from optimism bias and depressive realism. And need money

Why does everyone think creeper Glen Bishop is going to molest Sally? Pretty sure she'd kick him in the dick and that would be the end of it.

The problem with Betty is that aside from being really beautiful, she has no sense of humor and isn't very smart or interesting.

Dear Friends

JH01
JH02

My darling and dear friend Jorge is in town from Brazil. I am sooooooo excited to see him this evening for the first time in three years! Do you have one of those dear friends that just hearing their voice puts you in the best mood and you feel the biggest smile creeping across your face. Jorge and I first met many years ago when I first moved to San Francsico. He was my St Jorge always looking out for me and my well being, taking me a bit under wing. We had many adventures.

Here are a few photos of his place in Rio. Although these are so old I'm sure everything has changed by now.

The Seafarers

The Seafarers - Sea of Love from Eighty Four Films on Vimeo.

I've adored Kelly Tunstall's work for quite some time now... then along came Ferris Plock. (Maybe Ferris came first but that is my order of knowing about them)  Then Kelly and Ferris started doing their work together which at first you wouldn't think would jive but her delicate maidens and his beast like men make for perfect companions, modern day belles and beasties. This video is at least a year old but one of my favorites of their seafarers series a newish venture for them since they usually work in static media. What I wouldn't do for one of their joint pieces, sigh... Visit  eighty four films on vimeo to see the rest of The Seafarers episodes.

masculine feminine

M-F-03
M-F-01

I've been playing a bit with a new concept for a new project. The qualities of masculine/feminine in one individual. I don't mean androgyny necessarily but encompassing the very feminine and the very masculine in one entity. The first image that popped in my mind was YSL's le smoking by Helmut Newton. There are the icons like Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich and Kate Moss. Sophia I inherently think of as feminine but wow does she look amazing in a suit. There are the films like Victor Victoria and Yentl even but these are all women encompassing the male. Are there male examples? Does David Bowie fall into this realm or is he too androgynous?

idée fixe

I've been a bit obsessed about finding a vintage turban for a couple of years now but, everytime I came across one it was in pretty awful condition. Well I finally found one in Palm Springs and I love it, the only problem is I don't think it quelled my preoccupation I think it fed it. yikes!

Shades of Grey

Gray

I've been working in shades of grey for a recent project.... photo credits later today
First photo: mjölk. I am just dying over those birch bark panels. Especially because I thought I was over birch. Apparently not even close. I wonder if I could make them myself? I think I might.

Birthdays

BD01
BD02
BD03At dinner last night (with our Misters) Celia and I were discussing birthday celebrations and how we like them. Since mine is in December I've always wished I could postpone it to 6 months later so I can have a proper celebration but I had to admit that I would chicken out anyway. As much as I love the thought of a big bash for my birthday, I quickly realize THAT means having all that attention focused on me and THAT kind of freaks me out. This uncomfortableness with any spotlight, hell a flashlight, was the biggest reason we did such a small city hall wedding.

Celia on the other hand couldn't disagree more saying... "I think its one of the best holidays of the year and a day that is all about me!" I almost fell out of my chair with laughter. I loved how different our responses are and I couldn't help but wish for a smidgen of that devil may care attitude. I could on the other hand see the possibility of a small dinner gathering with a few good friends and these gorgeous pennants hung from every doorway (from hearblack) I love that they had fun with the invites too.

Extended (home) tour to the airport.

PSM01

You thought I was done with Palm Springs didn't you. Okay this is the last one. I came across this map when doing my research for our trip. It costs a few bucks and it goes towards a good cause. You can purchase one here or if you are driving in from Los Angeles you can pick one up at the Tramway Gas Station (directly below) it's the first building you see as you drive into Palm Springs. Apparently there is also guided tour you can take that comes highly recommended and I may go on it next time around but I sometimes get a bit antsy and impatient so the map was the best option for me. It also allowed me to pick and choose which sites I wanted to visit and leave out the ones I was less interested in. So once we had the car packed and ready for the airport we pulled out our map and made our list.

PSM02
PSM03

The Tramway Gas Station by Albert Frey. I was also a bit smitten with all of the desert plants and stunning landscaping on all the properties. It is such a change in scenery from Northern California and so sculptural.

PSM04

Edris House by E. Stewart Williams

PSM05

All you could see of the Raymond Loewy House by Albert Frey.

PSM06

Shapiro House by Michael Black

PSM07

The House of Tomorrow by William Krisel, also known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway. Krisel is also a talented illustrator.

PSM08

Coachella Valley Savings and Loan by E. Stewart Williams. Hmmm looks familiar, a little like this, or this, or this, no?

PSM09
PSM10

The Kaufman House by Richard Neutra. I was so happy to see that it was so well taken care of. And the landscaping surrounding the house was exquisite.

PSM11

And finally the Grace Miller House also by Neutra. It looks to be under some renovation which is always nice to see. The darling Bride and Groom put books in everyone's welcome bags and mine had a book about the relationship between Neutra and Miller while the house was being designed and built. Can you believe them?! They really went over the top.

Last Stop-Korakia

KOR01
KOR02
KOR03
KOR04
KOR05

Our final stop and where we stayed for the remainder of our time in Palm Springs was at the Korakia. Most people who inquired where we were staying in town either responded with "oh yea that place is great!" or "hmm never heard of it" Which is just a testament to the place not being overrun. And if you are staying here it is more of a reserved and quiet locale. I'll have to admit before we arrived I had my doubts. I wouldn't say I am too keen on the Moroccan aesthetic but it was really so well done.

The rooms were filled with genuine antiques and each layout was original. The service was stellar from nearly every standpoint, uniform, breakfast, genuine friendliness and no interaction was stiff or overly formal. It was a small enough place that nearly the entire wedding party stayed here together, which was really quite delightful. We'll definitely be back.

Jo Hamilton

JO HAMILTON

I've already mentioned that our friends wedding was the most beautiful weddings we have ever attended and it was for details like this. (You can get a sneak peek of the wedding over here.) The night before the wedding they held a cocktail party at the Orchard house at the Korakia and this portrait hung above the fireplace.

Jo Hamilton is an artist they came across on one of their many visits to Portland (the grooms family lives there) and they knew they had to commission this piece.  I think one of my favorite elements (besides the obvious and astounding fact that it is a crocheted portrait!) is all the uncut bits of yarn that hang below the portrait and that it stands so well on the wall on its own with no need for any framing. Which we all know is always a plus, why of why does framing cost so much? You an check out more of her work here.
