I should be saving these for a future endeavor but I can't help myself... I'm loving the new Cam!
Schimdt's is a joy as well, simple German food from those that know it well. The place used to be an awful dirty corner store. They clean up well no? My favorite part is they kept the coolers and incorporated them into the design of the place. Beautiful light light boxes!
Update: (And fun fact) All the interior was done by Ohio design.
A friend of mine who is a stylist just told me that they are set to win the account of Hussein Chayalan. I couldn't be more excited for her. His S/S 07 show will be forever seared in my mind. Thanks to Wallpaper I found a full version of the show. Although it's a bit big. I'm not sure how to resize it. Anyone? Also it takes a bit to load so I would push play and then pause and come back to it. But perhaps you would like to watch it full screen on his website.
I would also add that Hussein is not just beloved in the fashion realm, his experimentation, use of technology, and structural pieces are admired throughout the design world. And if you have a few more moments to spare check out this video on his work.
And on a side note on what women want... "Women want to be Swedish" hmm maybe not Swedish but yes we want everything that Swedish women have. Why is that so difficult to understand? !?!
Speaking of the Girl Scouts... Wow! I've seen the logo a million times but never realized how great it was. Or perhaps I just never looked at it as an adult. So I went on a search to find out who created it and it was none other than Saul Bass. How genius. I would love to know who hired him or how he came to design it. Anyone know?
Happy Birthday Mom! Doesn't she look fantastic in these photos! And quite stylish too! She turned 20 eight days before I was born. Wow, I can't imagine. She was my Girlscout leader. She is the reason I am the artistic person I am today by exposing me to ALL the arts. She is a talented and accomplished artist and teacher.
For those in San Francisco I found Apartamento at the Polk Street Magazine stand Smoke Signals. Love that place! They have everything!Although I crave a real shop like this closer to my hood.
I've been meaning to photograph this piece for ages but I just haven't had a good enough camera. So these are some test shots with my new cam, a birthday present to myself. I'm not sure if I am completely happy with the shots but this is sans flash and sans tripod ....just completely auto.
Either way the cabinet is a piece I picked up from 'Out of the Closet' years and years ago. I paid $40 for the thing and it was in typical 1950's office form, completely beige. Nothing a little paint and collage work couldn't fix.
I would love a commercial project of found objects like this each transformed to serve the whole. I really enjoyed getting a peek into Annie Coggan's home for this reason. Oh the Chairs!
While trying to gather my work together I thought it might be a good idea to include some of my illustrations as well. As I began going through old sketch books I didn't realize how many were from our trip to Brazil a couple of years ago. I could use another trip like that in the not too distant future. Especially when I feel like I'm suffering from inertia.
Update: Oh yes of course Lindsay I can explain the above locations...
The top left is the Pain de Sucre aka Sugarloaf The top right is a collage of the gorgeous sidewalks (some designed by Burle Marx), the favelas toppling into the downtown streets, and the large amazonion seed pods. (They are amazingly huge)
The middles two are in the courtyard of the Instituto Moreira Salles. A modern home turned into an art gallery. Its maddeningly difficult to find anything on the architecture... even in the book shop there was nothing and you aren't allowed to photograph the property. The image on the left is the pool house and the right is looking into the courtyard of the house next to the fountain. The architect was Olavo Redig de Campos and Burle Marx designed the fountains, gardens and perhaps the pool house as well.
And the bottom two are in Brasilia. Old Niemeyer on the left, the Palace of Justice, and new Niemeyer on the right, the new National Library.
Ranchin' is a loose term here. I don't mean round up the cattle and bring em home. I mean sleep all day on the deck under the trees, or shoot a round of arrows or maybe horseshoes is more your thing, or make big delicious meals to be enjoyed alfresco. And by all means have fun putting together that 'Ranch Wardrobe'. After all this ranch is owned by city folk.
These are a collection of photos I've rounded up of us spending time at our good friends Ranch House. We love it there oh so much. The place is simply serene. If you are interested it seems they are renting it out this year. You can check it out over here. I know you'll love it just as much as we do.
As I happened upon Kuntzel+Deygas I was reminded that they had done the opening sequence of "Catch me if you Can". It was quite probably one of my favorite parts of the film and lives on in the recesses of my mind.
And as the season finale of Mad Men is happening tomorrow it made me think how much I dislike the opening sequence. The illustration to me looks like you gave it to a first year architecture student. I've thought this from the first time I watched it. I know its getting lots of love in all the publications but... Really? It looks like a cheap knock off version of Kuntzel+Deygas' sequence above. Does anyone feel the same? I don't normally like to be negative in this space but it irks me that a show I love so much, that gets everything right, has one blaring error and I have to see it over and over. Is everyone just drinking the punch? Should I just pony up to the punch bowl too?
A project I'm working on reminded me of Heather Benning's dollhouse. Something to do with the days turning to night earlier and earlier and being able to peer into peoples homes on your ride home from work. I never like the days getting shorter but there is something very warm and delightful to seeing this sliver of others lives. This in turn made me think of advent calenders and how much I loved them growing up. The anticipation of opening the next door or window to find a new scene or chocolate.
On another note, some lovely words about los angeles over here. I couldn't have said it better... but perhaps I should add some los angeles posts from time to time.
I try my best to always link back to designers, artists, photographers, chefs, architects, funny people, Misters, supermodels, textile dj industrialists or whomever catches my eye and I end up posting about here but if for some reason you aren't happy with the recognition please say so and I will banish you, um er, remove the post immediately.
